Taxonomy
Trigona erythra was named by Schletterer (1891). It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 17664, an exoskeleton.

It was recombined as Trigona (Trigona) erythra by Zeuner and Manning (1976); it was recombined as Axestotrigona (Axestotrigona) erythra by Engel and Solórzano-Kraemer (2022), Engel et al. (2023).
