Taxonomy
Homiphoca murfreesi was named by Hafed et al. (2023). Its type specimen is CMM-V-10318, a mandible (incomplete body of left mandible lacking ramus and most of body), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Meherrin River, which is in a Pliocene marine horizon in the Yorktown Formation of North Carolina.
