Homiphoca murfreesi

Taxonomy
Homiphoca murfreesi was named by Hafed et al. (2023). Its type specimen is CMM-V-10318, a mandible (incomplete body of left mandible lacking ramus and most of body), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Meherrin River, which is in a Pliocene marine horizon in the Yorktown Formation of North Carolina.

Mandibular symphysis thick, oval in outline, its long axis inclined dorsoventrally; mandibular symphysis passes under posterior alveolus of p2, reaching beginning of p3; p1 single-rooted with round alveolus; p1 large and mediolaterally compressed; mental prominence pronounced; canine oval in sec- tion; post-canine teeth aligned parallel to toothrow and multicus- pidate; mental process present, extending between p1 and p2; diastemata between teeth absent; basal cingulum well developed on lingual side; main cusp on all cheek teeth sharp, triangular in shape; supplementary cusps well developed.
