Mesonyx navajovius was named by Cope (1881). It is the type species of Dissacus.

It was recombined as Dissacus navajovius by Cope (1882), Cope (1888), Scott (1892), Matthew (1897), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Matthew (1937), Rigby (1980) and Solé et al. (2018).
