Athaliinae was named by Rohwer (1911). It is extant. Its type is Athalia.

It was reranked as the tribe Athaliini by Wappler et al. (2005); it was reranked as the family Athaliidae by Niu et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Tenthredinidae by Rohwer (1911); to Allantinae by Wappler et al. (2005); and to Tenthredinoidea by Niu et al. (2022).
