Helaletes nanus
Taxonomy
Lophiodon nanus was named by Marsh (1871) [also said to be 1872
NOT the same as "Lophiodon nanus" of Marsh 1871]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is YPM 11080, a maxilla (fragments of both upper jaws with all the cheek-teeth represented on the right side), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.
It was recombined as Hyrachyus nanus by Leidy (1872), Leidy (1873) and Cope (1873); it was recombined as Dilophodon nanus by Scott (1883); it was synonymized subjectively with Helaletes boops by Wortman and Earle (1893); it was recombined as Helaletes nanus by Marsh (1872), Osborn and Wortman (1895), Hay (1902), Peterson (1919), Troxell (1922), Wood (1934), Radinsky (1963), Gazin (1976), Schoch (1984), Stucky (1984), Schoch (1989), McCarroll et al. (1996) and Colbert and Schoch (1998).
