Piesbergopterum avionensis was named by Nel and Roques (2021). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.A71354, a forewing, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Terril No 7, Avion, which is in a Westphalian C/Westphalian D terrestrial shale in France.
