Megantereon problematicus was named by Collings (1972). Its type specimen is Bernard Price Institute for Palaeontological Research, M.8280, a skull (incomplete skull and mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Homotherium problematicum by Werdelin and Lewis (2020).
