Taxonomy
Ursus abstrusus was named by Bjork (1970). Its type locality is Hagerman (UM-Ida 79-65), which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in the Glenns Ferry Formation of Idaho.
It was recombined as Protarctos abstrusus by Wang et al. (2017).
