Taxonomy

Homotherium was named by Fabrini (1890). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Machairodontinae by Kurten and Anderson (1980), Scharapov (1996), Martin (1998); to Homotherini by Martin et al. (2000); to Homotheriini by Kurten (1968), Slater and Van Valkenburgh (2008); to Felidae by Fabrini (1890), Carroll (1988), Geraads (1997), Werdelin and Peigne (2010); to Machairodontini by Berta and Galiano (1983), Wallace and Hulbert (2013); and to Homotheriina by Jiangzuo et al. (2022).

Synonyms

Dinobastis was named by Cope (1893). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Smilodon by Matthew (1910); it was reranked as Homotherium (Dinobastis) by Kurten (1968); it was synonymized subjectively with Homotherium by Churcher (1966), Schultz et al. (1970), Waldrop (1974), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Churcher (1984), Dalquest and Carpenter (1988), Dundas (2005).

It was assigned to Machairodontinae by Hay (1902); to Homotherium by Kurten (1968); to Machairodontini by Berta and Galiano (1983); and to Felidae by Cope (1893), Martin et al. (1988), Carroll (1988), Martin (1998).
Ischyrosmilus was named by Merriam (1918).

It was synonymized subjectively with Dinobastis by Berta and Galiano (1983); it was synonymized subjectively with Homotherium by de Beaumont (1978), Martin (1980), Martin et al. (1988).

It was assigned to Machairodontinae by Bjork (1970), Kurten and Anderson (1980).
