Taxonomy
Felis obscura was named by Hendey (1974). Its type specimen is L 10100, a maxilla (L maxillary fragment), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is 'E' Quarry, which is in a Pliocene cave sandstone in the Varswater Formation of South Africa.
It was recombined as Megantereon obscura by Morales et al. (2005); it was recombined as Yoshi obscura by Jiangzuo et al. (2023).
