Cynodon speciosus was named by Fafiot (1882). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Cynotherium speciosus by Trouessart (1886); it was recombined as Aymardia speciosa by Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Amphicynodon speciosus by Cirot and de Bonis (1992).
