Alveolites was named by Lamarck (1801) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-m D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 711]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Alveolitinae by Hill (1981), Murray (1985); to Alveolitidae by Brühl (1996); and to Tabulata by Sepkoski (2002).
