Taxonomy
Mesocyon robustus was named by Matthew (1907). Its type specimen is AMNH 12884, a mandible (partial left and right rami), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is AMNH Rosebud 7, which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in the Harrison Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Enhydrocyon robustus by Swisher (1982) and Swisher (1982); it was recombined as Paraenhydrocyon robustus by Wang (1994), Wang and Tedford (1996), Wang et al. (2008).
