Taxonomy
Halodon formosus was named by Marsh (1889). Its type specimen is YPM 11812, a tooth (P4), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Cimolomys formosus by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Ptilodus formosus by Gidley (1909), Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Cimolomys gracilis by Simpson (1929); it was recombined as Mesodma formosa by Clemens (1964), Clemens and Kielan-Jaworowska (1979), Sloan (1981), Archibald (1982), Storer (1991), Eberle and Lillegraven (1998), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004), Wilson et al. (2010), Donohue et al. (2013).
It was recombined as Cimolomys formosus by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Ptilodus formosus by Gidley (1909), Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Cimolomys gracilis by Simpson (1929); it was recombined as Mesodma formosa by Clemens (1964), Clemens and Kielan-Jaworowska (1979), Sloan (1981), Archibald (1982), Storer (1991), Eberle and Lillegraven (1998), Kielan-Jaworowska et al.
