Mustela lutris was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Latax lutris by Thomas (1911); it was recombined as Enhydra lutris by Fleming (1822), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Repenning (1976), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Willemsen (1992), Wilson and Reeder (1993) and Cherin et al. (2016).
