Taxonomy
Formica heraclea was named by Heer (1849). It is an impression.

It was synonymized subjectively with Formica lignitum by Heer (1864); it was recombined as Camponotus heracleus by Mayr (1867), Bolton (2012); it was recombined as Camponotites heracleus by Boudinot et al. (2024).
