Astrea sanctimihieli was named by Michelin (1844) [the species name was originally spelled sancti-mihieli, which needs to be corrected into sanctimihieli according to ICZN].

It was recombined as Astrocoenia sanctimihieli by Michelin (1843), d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Diplocoenia sanctimihieli by Beauvais (1964).
