Rhizotrogidae was named by Burmeister (1855). It is extant. Its type is Rhizotrogus.

It was corrected as Rhizotrogina by Bouchard et al. (2011); it was reranked as the tribe Rhizotrogini by Allsopp and Schoolmeesters (2024).

It was assigned to Melolonthini by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Melolonthinae by Allsopp and Schoolmeesters (2024).
