Astrea digitata was named by Defrance (1826) [The type species is attributed to Defrance under the art. 67-7 ICZN as d'Orbigny based his genus on Astrea digitata Michelin]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Dactylocoenia digitata by d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Thamnastraea digitata by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857); it was recombined as Synastraea digitata by de Fromentel (1861).
