Taxonomy
Synastrea neptuni was named by d'Orbigny (1850). Its type specimen is lectotype MNHN.F.R54656, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Thamnastraea neptuni by Milne-Edwards (1857); it was recombined as Thamnastraea (Synastraea) neptuni by de Fromentel (1861).
