Microsolena irregularis was named by d'Orbigny (1850). Its type specimen is syntypes MNHN-F-A26577 to 78, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Thamnastraea irregularis by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857), de Fromentel (1861).
