Taxonomy
Probassariscus antiquus matthewi was named by Merriam (1911). Its type specimen is UCMP 12539, a mandible (right mandible with broken p4, m1, and m2), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Probassariscus matthewi by Baskin (2004).

Synonyms
  • Rhapsodus tedfordi was named by Linares (1981) [genotype]. Its type specimen is F:AM 49102, a mandible (left and right mandibles), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Observation Quarry, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in Nebraska.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Probassariscus antiquus by Baskin (1989); it was synonymized subjectively with Probassariscus matthewi by Baskin (2004).
