Taxonomy
Bombus messegus was named by Engel and Wappler (2025). Its type specimen is NHMMZ PE 2001/5215a-LS, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Enspel, horizon S14, which is in a MP 28 crater lake shale in Germany. It is the type species of Bombus, Bombus (Kronobombus).
