Thamnastrea dumonti was named by Chapuis and Dewalque (1853). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Thamnastraea dumonti by Chapuis and Dewalque (1853); it was recombined as Thamnastraea (Synastraea) dumonti by de Fromentel (1861); it was misspelled as Thamnastraea dumonti by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857), Kiessling (2008).
