Ellipsosmilia excavata was named by Étallon (1859). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Valfin-les-Saint-Claude, Jura, Franche-Compte, which is in a Kimmeridgian reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Valfin Formation of France.
It was recombined as Epismilia excavata by de Fromentel (1861).
