Querquedula was named by Stephens (1826). It is extant. Its type is Anas querquedula.

It was assigned to Anatidae by Wetmore (1924), Wetmore (1933); and to Anatinae by Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Miller (1944), Brodkorb (1961), Brodkorb (1964).
