Iowaphyllum was named by Stumm (1949) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-u D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 174,680]. It is not extant. Its type is Smithia johanni.
It was assigned to Endophyllinae by Hill (1956); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Endophyllidae by Hill (1981), Coen-Aubert (2017).
