Thamnarea was named by Etallon and Thurmann (1864) [Sometimes written as Thamnaraea]. Its type is Thamnarea digitalis. It was considered unknown by Lathuilière and Gill (1998).
It was synonymized subjectively with Dendraraea by Wells (1956), Lathuilière and Gill (1998).
It was assigned to Actinacididae by Baron-Szabo (2003).
