Taxonomy
Macgeea was named by Webster (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Fras-u]. Its type is Pachyphyllum solitarium.

It was corrected as Macgea by Kiessling (2003).

It was assigned to Phacellophyllinae by Hill (1956); to Rugosa by Kaplan (1968); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002), Kiessling (2003); and to Phillipsastreidae by Coen-Aubert and Wrzolek (1991), Coen-Aubert (2017).
