Taxonomy

Smithiphyllum was named by Birenheide (1962) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u D Fame-l Sepkoski's reference number: 680]. It is not extant. Its type is Spongophyllum imperfectum.

It was assigned to Endophyllidae by Hill (1981); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kyphophyllinae by Brownlaw and Jell (2008).
