Taxonomy
Elephas planifrons was named by Falconer and Cautley (1846).

It was synonymized subjectively with Archidiskodon meridionalis by Pohlig (1885); it was recombined as Protelephas planifrons by Garutt (1957); it was recombined as Mammuthus planifrons by Gulec et al. (1999).
