Siphonophrentis was named by O'Connell (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 2,1240]. It is not extant. Its type is Siphonophrentis elongata. It is the type genus of Siphonophrentinae.
It was assigned to Streptelasmatinae by Hill (1956); to Siphonophrentinae by Merriam (1974); to Amplexidae by Hill (1981), Chen et al. (1997); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Siphonophrentidae by Tsyganko (2014), Coen-Aubert (2017).
