Taxonomy
Zelophyllum was named by Wedekind (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl S Ludl]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Tryplasmatidae by Hill (1956), Merriam (1972), Merriam (1973); to Pycnostylidae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).

C. W. Merriam 1972Corallites of medium size, very elongate, subcylindrical, with medium to narrow septal stereozone, short, partly acanthine septa, and complete, rather closely spaced tabulae. No dissepiments.
C. W. Merriam 1973Solitary and colonial nondissepimented rugose corals with cylindrical corallites of large and medium size. Wall moderately thick, tabulae straight to undulant and unarched. Septa short or stubby, usually tapering abruptly from wall; in places, walls thinned and studded with acanthine trabecular spines. Outer surface fairly even, with longitudinal grooves and no pronounced rugae.
