Funginella was named by d'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie Sepkoski's reference number: 796].

It was synonymized subjectively with Cyclolites by Wells (1956).

It was assigned to Funginellidae by Beauvais (1986); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
