Helioseris was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1102]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Leptoseris by Wells (1956).

It was assigned to Agariciidae by Budd and McNeill (1998); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
