Mephitinae was named by Bonaparte (1845). It is extant.

It was reranked as the tribe Mephitini by Baskin (1998).

It was assigned to Mustelidae by Bjork (1970), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Muizon (1982); to Melinae by Baskin (1998); and to Mephitidae by Wang and Carranza-Castaneda (2008) and Wang et al. (2014).
