Lithophyllon was named by Rehberg (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Lithophyllon undulatum.

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Fungiidae by Wells (1956), Gittenberger et al. (2011).
