Meandrastrea was named by d'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: K Berr-u K u Sepkoski's reference number: 848].

It was assigned to Montlivaltiinae by Wells (1956); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); to Montlivaltiidae by Pandey et al. (2007); and to Thecosmiliidae by Baron-Szabo (2021).
