Pironastrea was named by d'Achiardi (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo T Mi-m]. Its type is Pironastrea discoides.

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Siderastreidae by Wells (1956) and López-Pérez (2005).
