Platycoenia was named by Vaughan (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m T Mi]. Its type is Platycoenia jacksonensis.

It was assigned to Astrocoeniinae by Wells (1956); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
