Plesiocoenia was named by Alloiteau (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: J m Sepkoski's reference number: 658]. It is not extant. Its type is Plesiocoenia menabensis.

It was assigned to Smilotrochiidae by Sepkoski (2002).
