Scalariogyra was named by Gerth (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol T Mi Sepkoski's reference number: 839]. Its type is Scalariogyra escharoides.

It was assigned to Dichocoeniinae by Wells (1956); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
