Symphyllia was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1110]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Mussidae by Veron (2000); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lobophylliidae by Dai and Horng (2009).
