Thysanus was named by Duncan (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u T Plio-u]. Its type is Thysanus excentricus.

It was assigned to Faviinae by Wells (1956); to Faviidae by Johnson (1998); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
