Taxonomy

Notonectariae was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Notonectidae by Statz (1950), Popov (1971), Zhang (1989), Nel and Paicheler (1992), Zhang et al. (2012), Szwedo (2018).

It was assigned to Hydrocorisae by Latreille (1802); to Notonectaeformia by Statz (1950); to Heteroptera by Zhang (1989); to Nepomorpha by Zhang et al. (2012); and to Notonectoidea by Popov (1971), Nel and Paicheler (1992), Szwedo (2018).

Synonyms

Notonecta emersoni was named by Scudder (1890). Its type specimen is MCZ 3523, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Florissant (MCZ Collection), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Nel and Paicheler (1992), Zhang et al. (2012).
Notonecta binuda was named by Lauck (1960). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Florissant (Snow Museum, University of Kansas), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Nel and Paicheler (1992), Zhang et al. (2012).
Notonecta sieblosensis was named by Martini (1971). Its type specimen is SMF VI 211, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil.

Notonecta arvernica was named by Piton (1942). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lac Chambon (Piton coll), which is in a Gelasian crater lake diatomite/volcaniclastic in France.
