Taxonomy
Enaliarctos mitchelli was named by Barnes (1979). Its type specimen is UCMP 100391, a partial skull (anterior half of skull lacking teeth), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pyramid Hill, upper concretion-bearing bed, which is in an Aquitanian marine sandstone in the Jewett Formation of California.
