Xyela was named by Dalman (1819). It is extant. It is the type genus of Xyelidae, Xyelinae, Xyeloidea, Xyelini.

It was assigned to Xyelidae by Zhang (1989) and Carpenter (1992); to Xyelini by Rasnitsyn (1995); and to Xyelinae by Statz (1936) and Taeger et al. (2010).
