Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
M. Cozzuol 2001A phocid differing from Lobodontini, Mirounga, ‘‘Monachus,’’ Properiptychus, Callophoca, Piscophoca, Acrophoca, and Messiphoca by having an entepicondilar foramen and a conspicuous supinator ridge on the humerus. It differs from all ‘‘Monachinae’’ by having strongly everted ilia, very conspicuous epicondylar crests on the femur, and unreduced pedal ungual phalanges. It differs from all Lobodontini by having a conspicuous scapular spine and short epiphyses on the ungual phalanges of the fore flipper. It differs from all other members of the Phocinae (except Erignathus) by having a lesser excavation on the lateral side of the ilium, and from all phocines by a long and not abruptly terminated deltopectoral crest on the humerus.
