Scolia was named by Fabricius (1775). It is extant. It is the type genus of Scolietae, Scoliinae, Scoliini.

It was assigned to Hymenoptera by Latreille (1796); to Scolietae by Latreille (1802); to Scoliidae by Zhang (1989); and to Scoliini by Liu et al. (2021), Taylor (2024).
