Megachile was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Megachilidae, Megachilini, Megachiles.
It was assigned to Megachiles by Latreille (1802); to Megachilidae by Cockerell (1925), Zhang (1989) and Carpenter (1992); and to Megachilini by Zeuner and Manning (1976) and Gonzalez et al. (2012).
